At last, scientific proof that daydreaming doesn’t mean you’re a flake

first_imgQuartz:Western culture tends to look down on daydreamers—as if it’s a childish habit that we’re supposed to outgrow, along with make-believe games and imaginary friends. But none other than Sigmund Freud, the father of modern psychology, thought that most adults daydream too little. Daydreaming, he theorized, is important for creative thinking. When we indulge in fantasies about our hopes for the future, we prepare ourselves to deal with reality. Now a new study, led by cognitive psychologist Michael Kane at the University of North Carolina Greensboro and published in Psychological Science, confirms that daydreaming can be positive—depending on the context and content of our fantasies.Read the whole story: Quartz More of our Members in the Media >last_img read more

Raldorf fights for podium place in Buriram

first_imgThe Thailand Super Series Racing League got underway at the Chang International Circuit in Buriram on May 19-22. Temperatures were in the high 40’s all weekend, with the action on the track proving to be just as hot.Starting from 8th place on the grid in Race 1 after suffering a loss of power in qualifying, Pattaya based driver Thomas Raldorf of the TR Motorsport racing team battled his way through the field and managed to reach fourth place before being overtaken on the final corner and having to settle for fifth at the chequered flag.Thomas Raldorf of the TR Motorsport racing team leads on the opening lap of Race 2 at the Chang International Circuit in Buriram, Sunday, May 22.The following day in Race 2, with the top five from the previous race starting in reverse order and Raldorf sitting on pole, the TR Motorsport racer held off a strong challenge of three other cars going into the first corner and powered up the main straight still in the lead. The lead would be relinquished however on lap 2 as the second placed Honda Jazz nipped through on the inside to relegate Raldorf down to second position on the track. Raldorf fought back fiercely and tried to retake the lead on the outside of turn 3 but he came into contact with the Jazz and was forced onto the grass, dropping him back into fifth place. Undaunted by this setback Raldorf regrouped and was able to fight his way back up to third position and a place on the podium by the end of the race. The TR Motorsport team will next be in action at the Bira International Circuit in Pattaya for the TOYO3K series on June 3-5.last_img read more

Say What? Google Reader Translates Any Feed into Your Native Tongue

first_imgRelated Posts If you’re like most folks interested in technology, you likely have a feed reader full of hundreds of RSS feeds on your favorite topics. No doubt, they all have one thing in common: they’re in a language that you’re capable of reading. But what about all of that interesting news and information that’s written in languages you don’t speak? Get ready to have access to even more information about your favorite topics, because now Google Reader leverages Google Translate technology to convert any feed to your preferred language. To use the new offering, subscribe to any feed. Once subscribed, select “Translate into my language” from “Feed settings…” and the feed will be automatically translated to the best of Google’s ability, based on your default language preference. I tested the service against Cybozu Labs – a feed that comes through RSS in Japanese – and was pleasantly surprised. While a few of the characters remained, the majority of the content came through. Not only that, but the content was translated in a way that was legible and coherent. While at first blush, this may seem to be a minor feature, it actually holds the potential to change the way people read feeds – and the feeds they choose to read. It will be incredibly interesting to see what non-English blogs start growing in popularity now that they’re no longer hindered by limited linguistics. But how will people find these blogs? That’s the other thing that makes the translation feature so interesting: it appears to work on shared items, as well. Now, you can start reading and sharing information in any language with all of your Google Reader contacts – regardless of the languages they speak. And once we start breaking down those language barriers and sharing ideas with more people, that may be a real step toward a truly World Wide Web. Line-ups: Brescia v Inter

first_imgInter start Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez again, but bring back Kwadwo Asamoah, while Brescia have Mario Balotelli and Alfredo Donnarumma with a new goalkeeper. It kicks off at the Stadio Rigamonti at 20.00 GMT. You can follow all the build-up and action as it happens from this game and Parma-Verona on the LIVEBLOG. Antonio Conte’s Nerazzurri missed the opportunity to close on leaders Juventus, as both teams were held to draws at the weekend by Parma and Lecce respectively. The coach complained that he had very few options available to him following an injury crisis, as Stefano Sensi, Alexis Sanchez, Matias Vecino and Danilo D’Ambrosio are still out of action. It means there is no rest for Lukaku and Lautaro, while Roberto Gagliardini again takes the midfield slot. Asamoah returns after a knee issue to take the left flank from Cristiano Biraghi, while Diego Godin completes the defence. Brescia boss Eugenio Corini is already under pressure, with reports Cesare Prandelli is being lined up to replace him just months after taking the team to the Serie B title. He has more problems to deal with, because goalkeeper Jesse Joronen suffered a knock against Genoa and is not even in the squad, so 31-year-old former Inter shot-stopper Enrico Alfonso has to make his career Serie A debut. Leonardo Morosini has also been left out, apparently in a technical decision, with Jhon Chancellor, Ernesto Torregrossa, Luca Tremolada, Giangiacomo Magnani, Federico Viviani and Daniele Dessena injured. Alfredo Donnarumma returns to the starting XI with star man Balotelli, who so far has only one goal to his name in the Rondinelle jersey. The trequartista role seems to be scrapped, moving to a 3-5-2 formation this evening that mirrors Inter, with 21-year-old Massimiliano Mangraviti brought in. Inter could win their first five away games of the Serie A season, something this club only achieved in 1966-67, 1997-98 and 2012-13. Brescia: Alfonso; Mangraviti, Cistana, Gastaldello; Sabelli, Bisoli, Tonali, Romulo, Mateju; A Donnarumma, Balotelli Brescia bench: Andrenacci, Ndoj, Spalek, Zmrhal, Aye, Matri, Martella, Semprini Inter: Handanovic; Godin, De Vrij, Skriniar; Candreva, Gagliardini, Brozovic, Barella, Asamoah; R Lukaku, Lautaro Martinez Inter bench: Padelli, Berni, Ranocchia, Politano, Lazaro, Borja Valero, Dimarco, Esposito, Biraghi, Bastoni Ref: Fabbri Watch Serie A live in the UK on Premier Sports for just £11.99 per month including live LaLiga, Eredivisie, Scottish Cup Football and more.
