Cajun-Light Flavors at Port Orleans French Quarter

first_imgShare This!If you’re not a fan of intense spice and spicy foods, Cajun food can sound scary. Between bold flavors and lots of spice, it may be a tough sell for fans of milder foods. But sometimes on vacation, it’s nice to do things outside of your norm. At Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory at Port Orleans French Quarter, many of the items on the menu are “Cajun-inspired”, but they are mild enough for all palates. Two of the meals that you’ll find that embrace that Cajun-inspired vibe are the Jambalaya and the Shrimp Po’ Boy.If you want to make the Shrimp Po’ Boy a safe option for all palates, simply ask for the remoulade sauce on the side. (For those who aren’t familiar, remoulade is a spicy mayonnaise sauce — the flavors the way that Disney makes it remind me almost of a zippy tartar sauce.) Without the sauce, this becomes a sub roll with shedded lettuce, sliced tomatoes, and fried shrimp. For the amount of shrimp you get, the $11 price for the sandwich and chips is very reasonable.Another Cajun staple is Jambalaya — a mix of chicken and andouille sausage with vegetables, stewed together in a spicy sauce with rice. If you head to Louisiana, you can find some jambalaya that will make you believe in the existence of hell with the amount of spice burning up your mouth. But this is Disney — no more hell at WDW since Mr. Toad went to the great beyond. What you’ll find is a lovely blend of flavors with a hint of heat–just enough so that you’re eating jambalaya and not just a rice bowl with sausage. It also comes with a mammoth piece of cornbread, making this an incredibly filling meal for the $12 price tag.Do you like that Disney has presented these foods in a way that is pleasing for just about everyone, or do you think Disney should turn up the heat and make these dishes full Cajun spice? Let us know in the comments.last_img read more

Mozambique leads in marine conservation

It’s the second major conservation area in the country to be declared within the last two years, after the creation of the Lake Niassa reserve in mid-2011.The proclamation came as a result of eight years’ work by the World Wide Fund for Nature’s (WWF) Mozambique chapter together with humanitarian agency Co-operative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere (Care), academia and the country’s government. This vast area, located in the north of the country between the Nampula and Zambézia provinces, encompasses ten islands – five for Primeiras and five for Segundas – as well as mangrove forests that contain eight species, vibrant coral reefs, shrimp, fish and seabird breeding sites and seagrass ecosystems. It’s a nesting ground for sooty terns and the vulnerable dugong, and is home to five of the world’s seven marine turtle species, as well as the mysterious coelacanth. This makes it ecologically sensitive and significant. But in recent years fish stocks have dropped because of exploitation by local communities as well as commercial ventures, and unauthorised tourism was also taking its toll. Time was running out for Primeiras and Segundas, until conservation authorities stepped in to educate the community about protecting this precious natural resource.Sustainable fishing introducedThanks to fishing associations formed within communities and driven by WWF and Care, locals now understand the importance of securing their food supply and income, as well as those of generations to come. The formation of associations has also, in some cases, facilitated access to finance, which in turn has helped to start up small enterprises such as a ferry between the islands and the nearby coastal city of Angoche. One fishing association is helping its women to become more literate so that they can play a bigger role in the new set-up.Through education, by creating no-fish zones, by facilitating greater access to markets for fishing associations, and by introducing sustainable agriculture and mariculture techniques, the Primeiras and Segundas Sustainable Livelihood project has brought this natural trove back from the brink. For instance, communities have been encouraged to return accidentally captured adult turtles to the sea and to stop eating turtle eggs and meat.“We won a victory today with the declaration of Primeiras and Segundas,” said Caroline Simmonds of the WWF-US’s Coastal East Africa programme, in a statement. “The declaration is an incredible achievement for both marine conservation and the people who depend on these resources. Mozambique’s coast feeds hundreds of thousands of people.”Florêncio Marerua, country director of WWF Mozambique, added: “This is a very important step in our effort to achieve the conservation and sustainable management of Mozambique’s marine and coastal resources, as this adds a globally significant area to the network of marine protected areas along the country’s coast.”He said that the organisation was excited about the fact that the area was saved because of collaboration between citizens, NGOs, academia and government, which is reportedly still drafting management plan for the new MPA.Helping to protect the world’s oceansAccording to WWF, Primeiras and Segundas contains the most abundant, diverse and robust hard and soft coral community in the country. Other marine treasures include its underwater caverns, colourful marine life, and mangrove and seagrass plant life.Coral reefs around the world – including Australia’s iconic Great Barrier Reef – have come under threat from bleaching, a phenomenon that occurs when coral expel the symbiotic unicellular algae, known as zooxanthellae, that live in their tissues. This turns the coral white. It’s caused by a number of factors that include changes in salinity, bacterial infections or exposure to air, but most commonly because of changes in water temperature. However, apart from an incident in 2009, the coral in Primeiras and Segundas have escaped this threat because of cold water that wells up from the sea floor.“The proclamation is a significant contribution by Mozambique to safeguarding the future of the world’s marine environment more generally,” said John Tanzer, director of WWF’s Global Marine programme.last_img read more

The Latest CEO fraud charge hammers Teslas stock

first_imgDETROIT – The Latest on efforts by federal regulators to remove Elon Musk from his position as CEO and chairman of Tesla (all times local):5 p.m.Tesla’s stock plunged nearly 14 per cent Friday, wiping out $7 billion in shareholder wealth after government regulators accused Elon Musk of committing securities fraud and sought to oust him as CEO of the electric car maker. It marked the largest one-day decline in Tesla’s shares in nearly five years. The steep decline left Tesla’s stock at $264.77, a 30 per cent drop from where it stood Aug. 7 after Musk tweeted that he had secured funding to finance a buyout at $420.The Securities and Exchange Commission filed a civil complaint late Thursday alleging that Musk made the bold statement even though he hadn’t lined up the estimated $25 billion to $50 billion needed to take Tesla private. The SEC contends Musk should be removed as CEO for his alleged misconduct.___9:45 a.m.According to a person knowledgeable about talks between Tesla and federal securities regulators, CEO Elon Musk rejected a settlement that would have allowed him to pay a small fine and stay on as CEO of the electric car company. The person, who asked not to be identified because the negotiations were private, said Friday that Musk rejected the offer because he didn’t want a blemish on his record. On Thursday the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filed a civil complaint in U.S. District Court in Manhattan seeking to oust Musk and alleging that he committed securities fraud with false statements about plans to take the company private. To stay on as CEO, the person said that Musk would have had to agree to conditions including restrictions on when he could release information publicly. The SEC said in its complaint that Musk falsely claimed in an Aug. 7 tweet that funding had been secured for Tesla Inc. to go private at $420 per share, a substantial premium over the stock price at the time. The SEC now wants a “bar prohibiting Musk from serving as an officer or director of a public company.” It also is asking for an order enjoining Musk from making false and misleading statements along with repayment of any gains as well as civil penalties.Shares tumbled 12 per cent at the opening bell Friday.____9 a.m.The bombshell announcement that federal regulators are seeking to oust Elon Musk as CEO and chairman at Tesla is pushing shares even lower before the opening bell.Tesla and Musk are perceived as inseparable by many investors, with some industry analysts putting his value baked into each Tesla share in excess of $100. That’s a third or more of the value of each share. After a 13 per cent slump before the market opened Friday, Tesla’s stock plunged 13 per cent to $307.52.last_img read more
