Post Office campaigners to deliver message to Letterkenny

first_imgA group of community activists from Gweedore are planning a protest in Letterkenny in a bid to save their local post offices. The campaigners are bringing their action to Letterkenny on Saturday 8th December after local protests failed to save several services in West Donegal. The protest will be staged at the main Letterkenny Post Office at 11am. Independent Councillor Mícheál Cholm Mac Giolla Easbuig said that it was intolerable for any community to put up with what An Post is doing to rural Donegal at the moment. He said: “We have already lost four post offices in Burtonport, Dunfanaghy, Gort a’ Choirce and An Bun Beag and we are awaiting the result of a review of the decision to close the post office in Bun na Leaca. “On other areas, like Churchill, Quigley’s Point, Ballymagen, Ballyliffin, Burnfoot, Culdaff, Culkeeny, Dunaff, Dunkineely, Kildrum, Meenaneary and Rossnakill, post offices are either closing down or are threatened with imminent closure. This is death by a thousand cuts.”Mac Giolla Easbuig says the post office issue is just a symptom of a ‘greater disease’ affecting the whole county, and rural areas in particular. He said: “Since the foundation of the State, successive governments led by both Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael, have starved Donegal of infrastructure such as hospitals, railways, motorways, broadband and proper electrical and gas networks. “Some rural areas become inaccessible during the winter because of lack of funding to the County Council. The list is endless. “It is time communities came out and took a stand and fight for their survival because government policies are killing communities throughout rural areas, not just in Donegal, but throughout the country.”“We were advised by establishment politicians that the only way to fight post office closures was to make submissions to the review body. This approach has patently failed and it is now left to the communities to fight their own cause.”Mac Giolla Easbuig added that people from other rural areas will be welcome to join campaigners from Gweedore on 8th December. Effort Under Way to Increase Diversity in Home Ownership

first_imgWhite residents of North Carolina are more than 50 percent more likely to own a home than people of color. That’s according to the Corporation for Enterprise Development.Several groups have teamed up to try to reverse that trend – including the NAACP, the National Urban League, and the National Association of Real Estate Brokers. Ron Cooper, president of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers, said the Fair Housing Act of 1968 enabled more people to be able to purchase real estate. And in the decades since then, home ownership for people of color has increased to 46 percent.“It has declined now to 41 percent, which is very dangerous,” Cooper said. “So we’re on the campaign as an advocacy organization, raising the alarm to how important it is in building communities and building wealth.”In North Carolina 72 percent of whites own their own homes compared with 45 percent for people of color. This year, Wells Fargo committed to working to reverse the downward trend in home ownership. The group’s executive vice president and head of housing policy and home ownership Brad Blackwell said he blames the decline on a number of factors, including stagnant wages in the middle class, a decline in access to credit and a lack of generational wealth.“It will cause people to invest in not only their home, and take pride in that home, but take pride in their community,” Blackwell said of home ownership. “It makes for better schools. It makes for better economics for the larger community. It is a really good thing.”Cooper said people of color have a much harder time getting a loan. He said the reason the National Association of Real Estate Brokers was originally formed was because African American soldiers weren’t being given equal opportunities for Veterans Association loans when they returned from World War II.“Historically, there has been an issue in terms of race and in terms of mortgage access,” Cooper said. “And we’re still, at this point, discussing where’s that level of parity at?”Cooper said renting puts families further behind. And he adds that about 60 percent of renters spend close to a third of their income on rent.last_img read more

Sydney Rebels Win Mixed Open NTL Title

first_imgBy BEN HARRIS Sydney Rebels made it a hat-trick of national titles in the mixed opens division by defeating the Brisbane City Cobras 9-8 in a drop-off.In a match that lived up to the pre-match hype, the two sides showed off their skills during a touchdown-fest.Rebels co-captain Matthew Wigg said to win a third title was an incredible feeling.“This grand final win is the best win out of all of them. It is pretty good,” he said.“The [Western] Tigers took it to us [in the semi-final]. It was probably the longest drop-off any of us have been involved in and we weren’t happy to go to another one [in the final] that was for sure.”Jamie Chan was fantastic for the Rebels, scoring a hat-trick of touchdowns and taking home the male Player of the Final award.“Jamie Chan was a legend, he spent about 50 per cent of the time on the field in both drop-offs,” Wigg said.“But all the big guns stepped up as well. Manu [Wakely], Rushy [Daniel Rushworth], Frosty [Christian Frost] and all the other boys did really well to get us to the line.”The Rebels posted two early touchdowns thanks to Chan before Phoebe Thomas got the Cobras on the line. The two sides traded touchdowns until half-time where the Rebels took a 3-2 lead into the break. But it was the Brisbane side that came out firing in the second half. From the restart, the Cobras ran down the left-side of the field and the women’s Player of the Final, Alyce Hulbert, crossed over to level things up.They soon had the lead when Natasha Clifford crossed the white stripe. It was a cat and mouse game; whenever the Cobras scored the Rebels would hit straight back.It was like that until the full-time whistle when it was 7-all and it continued in the drop-off.The Rebels scored first in the drop-off through Tina Ashworth but the Cobras hit back in their reply set thanks to Lachlan Stanton’s third touchdown. With the scores at 8-all, the teams dropped to four players. But it was soon all over when Christian Frost scored the decisive touchdown to give his side their third consecutive Mixed Open title.SYDNEY REBELS 9 (Jamie Chan 3, Manu Wakely 2, Jason Say, Carly Walsh, Christian Frost, Tina Ashworth touchdowns) def BRISBANE CITY COBRAS 8 (Lachlan Stanton 3, Kieran Poole 2, Natasha Clifford 2, Alyce Hulbert touchdowns). For all the news, results and information from the 2013 X-Blades National Touch League, you can get it through the following ways:Websiteswww.ntl.mytouchfooty.comwww.austouch.com.auSocial MediaFacebook – www.facebook.com/touchfootballaustraliaTwitter – www.twitter.com/touchfootyaus (be sure to use the hashtag #NTL2013)Instagram – search for ‘Touch Football Australia’YouTube – www.youtube.com/touchfootballausRelated LinksMixed opens finallast_img read more

first_imgBarcelona prepared to offload midfield trioby Paul Vegas3 days agoSend to a friendShare the loveBarcelona are prepared to let Ivan Rakitic, Carles Alena and Riqui Puig leave in January. The trio have been rarely used by manager Ernesto Valverde due to the sheer number of options he has in midfield, with Sergio Busquets, Frenkie de Jong and Arthur his preferred trio.Arturo Vidal and Sergi Roberto are also ahead of them in the pecking order.Sport says they could all take up options to move elsewhere in the winter window. Rakitic would prefer a move to Italy or France over a switch to Manchester United in January.Spurs and Real Betis want to sign Alena on loan, while Puig could stay if they both leave.
