Gadgets being promoted on Windows Live Spaces

first_img8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting richard macmanus With the launch of Microsoft’s blogging and social networking platform, Windows Live Spaces (formally MSN Spaces), there hasbeen an increase in interest around gadgets – i.e. mini web apps. People can add gadgetsinto their Spaces site and Microsoft is starting to promote this feature heavily. JayFluegel of Microsoft has writtena post to encourage developers to create gadgets for the Live Spaces platform. Hewrote: Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… “…a big part of joining the Windows Live family today is support for web gadgetswritten by anyone including YOU! Thanks to the great work done on Gadgets to date, youcan now write a gadget that works both in Live.com (personalized portal) and Spaces(online expression/identity). And, it only takes one person adding it to their space foryour gadget to become popular — visitors to that space can choose “Add to your space” or“Add to Live.com” right from the header of the gadget, then visitors to that space canadd to their spaces, and it’s off to the races!” Gadgets are a way for externaldevelopers to get their apps onto the large Windows Live “family” of services – which drives usage and increases mindshare. This is what I call a real ecosystem atwork, because Windows Live Spaces (and live.com, the personalized start page) is aplatform that external developers can leverage to their advantage. It basically givessmall developers access to a mass market, so it makes sense to put your app on there andpotentially gain mass exposure. The same argument applies to doing a gadget/widget forMySpace or Google’s platform, although MySpace doesn’t really make it easy to leveragetheir platform.I also like the guidelines Fluegel gives to potential Spaces Live gadget developers:make gadgets customizable, make them “reflective of the author’s personality” [i.e. theSpaces user], and make sure it fits lots of different designs and themes. That old Webmaxim: develop for the user first.Developing MS gadgets – is it still too hard?Details on developing gadgets for Live can be found at the Windows LiveDev site. Note that I’ve had some feedback from developers that Live gadgetsare a lot harder to code than Google’s gadgets. When I wrote about Google’s gadgetplatform, Coogy developer Robert Yeager left thiscomment:“In developing gadgets for Cooqy, our eBay search engine, we were able to have aGoogle gadget ready in about 5 minutes, but the Microsoft Live.com version took 5 hours!Oh, and the Microsoft version of our gadget doesn’t work on Firefox!”Microsoft’s Mike Torres (from the LiveSpaces team) replied in my comments:“We’re working pretty hard to have a consistent Live.com, Spaces, Windows Vistadevelopment story for mini applications. And of course, reducing the barrier to adoptionby making it easier.”For more info on Live Spaces gadgets, the LiveSide blog has a podcast which explores thegadgets more with Jay Fluegel. Finally, if you’re a Live Spaces user, hereare instructions to start adding gadgets to your page. IndvSL: Murali Vijay backs skipper Virat Kohli’s five-bowler strategy

first_imgSkipper Virat Kohli’s strategy to field five bowlers would mean that six specialist batsmen can hardly afford to relax but opener Murali Vijay said there won’t be any extra pressure on them when they clash with Sri Lanka in a Test series, starting next week.Vijay is coming into the series after making a strokeful 150 against Bangladesh in the one-off Test and the opener is eager to cement his place in the side.”It’s actually not demanding. It is actually our role and if any one of us clicks, it’s going to be good for the team and we are going to be in a much comfortable position on most times. So it is a good challenge,” Vijay said when asked about the pressure on the top-order batsman in the face of Kohli’s five-bowler theory. Also read: Virat Kohli could go for 5-bowler strategy in Sri Lanka “It is a good responsibility to have on your shoulder to go in and bat and these are good things. If you are looking to dominate in a Test match, you have to perform as a team. You should have the plans and work according to them,” he added.Opener Shikhar Dhawan also made a blazing 173 in Bangladesh and with Lokesh Rahul also in line for a spot in the playing XI, the competition is intense. Vijay though is not too worried.”It (the competition in the top-order) is going to add more challenge for everybody to pull up their socks and do their bit for the team. Be as consistent as possible and it’s a good challenge and good thing to have in a team,” he said.advertisementWith two fairly young sides up against one another starting August 12, Vijay hopes the challenge will be worth everything. Also read: BCCI working committee meets, says sponsors backing board “There are a lot of youngsters, like Angelo Mathews is doing well, there is (Lahiru) Thiramanne, so there is a lot of talent in the team and it is going to be a tough series for us. We are also a young bunch of players and it is going to be a challenging series,” he said.Sangakkara retirement will leave a big holeAfter Kumar Sangakkara’s retirement post the second Test, Sri Lanka will be without two of their most experience batsmen — Mahela Jayawardene is already retired — and Vijay opines that India will have the upper hand on that count.”With Mahela retired and Sangakkkara about to (retire), there is a big hole in their batting line-up when these two greats retire. Overall I have seen Sri Lanka’s series with Pakistan and watched quite a bit of them. They are a talented side. We are looking forward to the challenge and hopefully we can pull it off,” he said.last_img read more

Vulture Festival Announces New Media Partners

first_img The Earwolf partnership, however, addresses the organizers’ goals in both promotion and content creation. The producers of podcasts like “Comedy Bang! Bang!” will be on hand, recording new podcasts live from the festival, something Burstein describes as a win from multiple angles. Outdoor advertising firm Outfront Media (formerly known as CBS Outdoor), comedy venue Carolines on Broadway, and Earwolf, the comedy podcast network co-founded by Scott Aukerman, comprise the first group of media partners for the festival’s 2016 edition, slated to take place May 21-22 at Milk Studios in New York. As for this year’s Vulture Festival, Burstein is optimistic about what each of the three new partners will bring. And the Vulture Festival is not alone. New York Media now produces a series of annual events under the banners of its media brands, including the Grub Street Food Festival, New York Taste, an annual New York Weddings event, and others. Like Vulture.com itself, the festival is a chance for the legacy magazine brand to branch out beyond traditional advertising revenues. “I’m able to go to sponsors and say, ‘Hey, part of your involvement will include the exposure that we get with Outfront,'” says Burstein. “Not only will you reach the people who come into the festival or read about it online, but you will also be part of this outdoor campaign.” Says Burstein, “It’s really going to ignite our comedy program. We’ve found that comedy is one of the most popular parts of the event, and so we really wanted to put some muscle behind it.” “It’s a growing new revenue stream,” Burstein continues. “It’s not nearly as significant as advertising and subscriptions are at this moment, but it’s important, as our digital business grows, to give people a live experience. I think that there’s an interest and a demand for live experiences.” The partnership with Carolines on Broadway, one of the most recognized stand-up comedy venues in the world, is all about enhancing the festival’s content. Vulture is partnering with Carolines EVP Andrew Fox to produce the show’s comedy programming.center_img “The festival has become a very important part of the [Vulture] brand and the brand’s identity, and it’s something that’s easily scaled. If we decide to do Vulture events throughout the year, it’s the logical next step. In partnering with Outfront Media, the festival’s organizers envision not only greater exposure for the event itself, but an added sales hook for potential sponsors. Galvanized by the success of the Vulture Festival’s first two years—the 2015 event featured headliners Jerry Seinfeld and Amy Poehler, among others—parent company New York Media expects more than 10,000 attendees, many of them in the ever-coveted millennial demographic. “It promotes Vulture’s brand, it’s another reason for sponsors to get involved, it’s another reason for people to buy tickets, and it’s more content for Vulture. It works all the way around.” New York Magazine’s culture and entertainment brand Vulture.com is stepping up its third-annual Vulture Festival with a trio of new partnerships that show how a regional brand can boost event attendee and sponsor traction. Burstein says New York Media has grand ambitions for the Vulture Festival, ambitions that aren’t necessarily confined to the one annual event. Although remaining tight-lipped on any specific plans for the future, preferring to focus on the upcoming event at hand, Bursein did offer a glimpse into what the company may have in mind going forward. “Since Vulture was launched, we have had this very clear idea of who our audience is, and we felt that there was a live component to Vulture just waiting to be done,” New York Media publisher Larry Burstein tells Folio:.last_img read more

What to Do When Youre Bored With Your Routines

first_imgLast spring I started a new exercise class. As someone who dislikes doing jumping jacks, burpees and push-ups, I found the workouts surprisingly enjoyable — at least for a while. But after several months, my newish hobby began to feel like watching the same episode of a TV sitcom over and over again. Overly familiar with the class routine, my excitement had been replaced with boredom, a nattering emotion that affects us all. “Humans are remarkably good at growing accustomed to the positive and negative changes in their lives,” said Sonja Lyubomirsky, a professor of psychology at the University of California, Riverside, who studies hedonic adaptation. A 2016 study estimated that 63 percent of us suffer from boredom at least once over a 10-day period. While it certainly won’t kill us, researchers have found that chronically bored people are more prone to depression, substance use and anxiety. But boredom isn’t a character flaw. It’s a state brought on by a behavioral phenomenon called hedonic adaptation: the tendency for us to get used to things over time. This explains why initially gratifying activities and relationships can sometimes lose their luster.center_img Sometimes this is a good thing, like when “it comes to adversities like losing a loved one, divorce or downsizing,” Ms. Lyubomirsky said. “We adjust fairly well, but this same flexibility can be detrimental to how we respond to positive life events.” Read the whole story: The New York Times Even though we all feel apathetic from time to time, according to Mary Mann, a researcher and author of “Yawn: Adventures in Boredom,” talking about it can be embarrassing because it’s often seen as being self-inflicted. “Only boring people get bored” seems to be a popular belief, Ms. Mann said.last_img read more
