Baby girl kidnapped from home returned to family alive and well

first_imgUNION, Mo. – A newborn abducted after her mother was slashed was found alive Tuesday in excellent condition, and a woman who had recently miscarried was arrested, officials said. Dr. Peter McCarthy, an emergency-room physician at St. John’s Hospital in Washington, Mo., said 11-day-old Abigale Lynn Woods has been reunited with her mother, father and other relatives. She was expected to be released from the hospital later Tuesday. “The family is elated and thankful to everyone in the community who prayed for them,” McCarthy said. “The baby was hydrated, nourished and in good condition when she arrived at the hospital.” FBI agent Roland Corvington identified the suspect as Shannon Beck, who lives a few miles from the home of the mother and baby. AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MOREThe joys and headaches of holiday travel: John PhillipsThe case broke when Beck’s sister-in-law, Dorothy Torrez, contacted authorities. “She’s the hero,” Franklin County Sheriff Gary Toelke said. On Sunday, Beck contacted Torrez to say she had given birth, Corvington said. Beck had been pregnant but apparently miscarried shortly before her own child was to be born. Torrez visited Beck on Monday and urged her to take the child to a doctor, the FBI agent said. Beck agreed, and Torrez accompanied her to St. Louis on Tuesday, about 45 miles away. Torrez noticed what appeared to be makeup on the baby’s forehead, Corvington said. When she rubbed the forehead, makeup came off what was covering a small birthmark. In publicizing the abduction, police had described Abby’s strawberry-red birthmark. Her suspicions aroused, Torrez confronted Beck, who gave her the baby, Corvington said. Torrez contacted police, and the baby was handed over to authorities around 5 p.m. Tuesday. “An outstanding ending, obviously,” Toelke said. Toelke said the county prosecutor would address criminal charges today. It wasn’t immediately clear where Shannon Beck was or whether she had a lawyer. The child’s mother, 21-year-old Stephenie Ochsenbine, told police Friday a woman entered her rural home, attacked her with a knife and stole the baby, who was a week old at the time.160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Zuma hands over District Six houses

first_img15 February 2011President Jacob Zuma has handed over 44 houses to residents in Cape Town’s historic District Six suburb, in an ongoing process to give proper housing to the victims of apartheid’s forced removals.Zuma, who attended the “Second Homecoming” ceremony on Friday, said that the handover was testimony that the government’s land reform and restitution process was “yielding results”.“District Six in Cape Town, like Sophiatown in Johannesburg, Umkhumbane (Cato Manor) in Durban, and Marabastad in Pretoria, bear the heart-wrenching scars of the apartheid system,” Zuma said. “We always promise and always come around to fulfil it . it has taken time, but we have come around to fulfil the promise . the time for healing has come.”Minister in the Presidency Trevor Manuel, Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform Gugile Nkwinti and Minster of Human Settlements Tokyo Sexwale were some of the government officials who attended the event.‘A life of dignity’Manuel, who grew up in the area, said that the restitution process should be speeded up. He said that the claimants wanted “a life of dignity” and that the government “should hurry up on District Six”.Nkwinti said that funds had been made available for phase two of the project, but that phase three “was a challenge”.He said that he had met Western Cape Premier Helen Zille and they had agreed that the people of District Six needed the cooperation between the national and provincial government.Applied ‘over 20 years ago’One of the beneficiaries, Yusuf Kader, 50, whose family was removed from the area when he was aged seven, said that coming back was a way of “restoring the dignity of our parents”.Getting a house there had not been easy, he said, indicating that he first applied for it over 20 years ago “and the papers got lost and we had to apply again in 1995”.Kader, who lives in Athlone, said that he expected to move into his three-bed-roomed house in the next three months. He said that the houses were being subsidised by the government and beneficiaries would pay between R190 000 and R250 000 depending on the size of the unit.Source: BuaNewslast_img read more

Trendwatching – Wired Or Tired In The Blogosphere

first_img8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Now here is something interesting… the two most popular ones arepride and anger. If only envy was upthere too, as then we would be able to nicely explain the origins of Ego Trending! On a more serious note, quantitative analysis and trending are really important toolsfor measuring success, explaining the past and preparing for the future. We are eager tohear your trending methods, tools and the sites that you find useful. Let us know in thecomments! There are a few things to note. Firstly, BlogPulse shows you the trend as number ofmentions relative to all blog posts. It is likely to be the number of posts mentioningthe term divided by the total number of posts that day. The fact that this is a relativenumber is a good thing, because it allows us to distinguish the growth due to risingnumber of blog posts, from the growth due to popularity. Another thing to note is thatthis chart does not quite agree with what we have seen on Technorati. For this reason, itis really important to understand the data and the method behind any chart. Given thetwo, it appears that Nielsen’s data is normalized and hence more accurate (assuming thereare no bugs). Here’s the same trend comparison in Google Trends (for 2006), which shows a similarpattern: Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Tags:#Statistics#web LinkedIn is above on the left and the maximum number of mentions is 240. Orkut is onthe right and the maximum number of mentions is 800.So if we ignore the scales for a moment (at this point MySpace violently protests), wesee that all of these trends put together explain the overall growing trend for socialnetworking. Also, these charts reveal fairly substantial events – for example you can seein Facebook’s chart when rumors started to spread that Yahoo! might acquire it.Finally, notice that people are starting to talk more about LinkedIn. Curiously, thisis at odds with the Alexa chart that was part of our recent analysis– at least if you believe that page loads correlate with mentions in the blogosphere(they should).Seeing a trend go byMost of the things that we have looked at so far have been wired. But the next one isnot. And it’s Ajax. Looking at the chart below, we see that the Ajax buzzword is gettingtired. This is probably not surprising to developers, because we areseeing the rise of libraries like jQuery that hideAjax and take it to a whole new level. So the new trend we can perhaps call MetaAjax.Ego TrendingOf course no blogger can resist ego surfing, or in this case ego trending. It is humannature to feed the ego with mentions of cross links. Here is my modest chart (I takecomfort in the fact that my presentation at DEMO went well).Comparing trends with BlogPulseTechnorati allows you to track a single trend. Comparing two trends is not easybecause of the difference in scale. For comparisons, you should head over to Blog Pulse, a service offered by Nielsen BuzzMetrics. Also Google Trends is a useful comparisontool, but in this post we’ll focus mainly on BlogPulse. In addition to basic blog search, BlogPulse allows you to compare up to 3 trends. Forexample, below is the comparison of Social Networking vs. Virtual Worlds over the last 6months. We close this post by pointing out that Blog Pulse has a page that features interesting trends across topics likenews, entertainment and technology. There is also a section called ‘Bizarre stuff’ that, naturally, caught my attention. The first featured trend there was comparing mentions ofthe Seven Deadly Sins: Virtual worlds is on the left, where maximum mentions is 200. Social Networking is onthe right and maximum mentions is 1200. So what can we say about both trends? They areboth wired, although it seems like virtual worlds has only just startedto pick up momentum – while Social Networking might be peaking (but this is not soclear).Zooming into a trendNext, we compare the companies that make up the social networking trend. Below areTechnorati trends for MySpace, Facebook, LinkedIn and Orkut.center_img alex iskold 1 Related Posts If you believe that high blogosphere activity indicates popularity, then this chartshows that social bookmarking is wired. You may recallthat in our recent post about Trendsin Seth Godin’s Alexa data, we concluded that social bookmarking sites grew substantiallyover the last six months. So both data sets lead to the same conclusion.Comparing trendsWe can also use Technorati charts to compare trends. We need to be a bit careful aboutthis, because each Y-axis has different numbers – but otherwise it is insightful. Forexample, people have been talking about the rising popularity of virtualworlds. Let’s see how this upcoming trend is comparing against its “daddy”, socialnetworking. A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… MySpace is above on the left, where the maximum number of mentions is 30,000 (Whoa!).Facebook is on the right and the maximum number of mentions is 2,200. Basic trendwatching with TechnoratiTechnorati is much more than a vertical search engine for blogs. It’s a service thatprovides indispensable tools for bloggers, readers and trendwatchers. Technorati keepsthe finger on the pulse of the blogosphere and gives us access to the news, both new andold. Perhaps the most interesting tool that Technorati offers to trendwatchers is thehistorical chart. Here is the chart of all blog posts mentioning socialbookmarking over the past year: By Alex IskoldLast week Apple’s iPhone made a stunningdebut. There are very few people who were not blown away by what Steve Jobs showed tothe world, from the stage of MacWorld 2007. The irony was that beforehand, we didn’t knowwhat exactly the iPhone would be, but most of us knew it was coming – because there wererumors and lots of blogosphere chatter about it in the weeks and months leading to theannouncement. Today’s blogosphere is a unique playground for trendwatchers who are seeking to findout what’s wired or tired. Tax Court Had Jurisdiction over Misaddressed Determination Notice (First Rock Baptist Church Child Development Center, TC)

first_imgCCH Tax Day ReportThe Tax Court had jurisdiction over a child care center’s petition for review of a Collection Due Process (CDP) determination. The Notice of Federal Tax Lien (NFTL) contained the taxpayer’s proper EIN and address; however, the notice was addressed to a related entity. Within 30 days of receiving the notice both the taxpayer and its related entity requested a CDP hearing, at which the settlement officer (SO) withdrew the lien but determined that the taxpayer was not entitled to a collection alternative because it was not current on its filing obligations. The court had jurisdiction to review the SO’s determination to the extent he denied relief to the child care center; that taxpayer received a written notice of determination that was properly mailed to the taxpayer’s last known address. The notice correctly specified the tax period, liabilities, and the collection action to which it related. Therefore, the taxpayer was the subject of an IRS collection action. However, the court did not have jurisdiction over the related entity named in the notice because it was not the subject of the IRS’s collection action and it did not receive a valid notice of determination. Moreover, the case was not moot. Although the IRS ultimately decided the lien issue in the center’s favor, it decided the collection alternative issue against the center. Therefore, there remained a live case or controversy between the child care center and the IRS concerning the correctness of the SO’s determination not to allow a collection alternative. Further, the court could not consider the childcare center’s challenge to its underlying tax liabilities because it did not raise that challenge at the original or supplemental CDP hearing. When reviewing a CDP determination, the court may only consider issues the taxpayer properly raised during the CDP hearing. Finally, the SO did not abuse his discretion in denying the childcare center’s request for an installment agreement. Although the center alleged that it was in full compliance at the time it filed its case, the center was not in full compliance with its tax obligations when the supplemental notice of determination was issued.First Rock Baptist Church Child Development Center, 148 TC —, No. 17, Dec. 60,900Other References:Code Sec. 6320CCH Reference – 2017FED ¶38,134.021Code Sec. 6330CCH Reference – 2017FED ¶38,184.12CCH Reference – 2017FED ¶38,184.60Tax Research ConsultantCCH Reference – TRC LITIG: 6,136.25last_img read more

Six-year-old debuts in Mumbai school-level tournament

first_imgMaking his debut in Mumbai’s prestigious Inter-School Giles Shield Cricket Tournament for under-14 boys, six-and-a-half-year-old Musheer Khan has created history.Sachin Tendulkar had started making news at the age of eight smashing records in schools cricket. Now, Musheer comes as the newest chip on the block representing his school Anjuman-e-Islam at the age of just six.Musheer, a left arm spinner, was not intimidated by the big boys around him.”My father asks if I am scared to play. I say no, so he allows me,” Musheer, son of Naushad Khan who has produced three IPL cricketers, said.Naushad’s elder son Sarfraz was already in the news earlier for scoring 400 in a school-level match. Now, he is happy to let his younger son pursue his dreams.Having prepared players like Iqbal Abdullah (Kolkata Knight Riders), Kamran Khan (Rajasthan Royals) and Rahil Shiekh (Mumbai Indians) for the Indian Premier League (IPL), Naushad has been proud of the cricket prodigies at home.”Cricket is in his blood. He sleeps with bat and ball which shows his interest in the game. His ball reaches stumps. He has not enough power to score, but is trying to fill his bag of experience,” Naushad said talking about Musheer, a fan of Daniel Vettori.Musheer was more inclined to left arm spin bowling than batting in a country fond of its batsmen. His coach Iqbal Thakur was all praise for his young student.”What he is doing at this age, boys elder than his age cannot do. Cricket is in his blood with his brother, father,” said the Anjuman-e-Islam school coach.advertisementWith time Musheer would learn to become crafty and cunning as spinners need to. For the moment those around him have been happy merely to see his deliveries reach the other end.last_img read more

Thibaut Courtois backs under-fire Antonio Conte after Watford defeat

first_imgChelsea lost to Watford 1-4 on Tuesday and it’s believed that their manager Antonio Conte is on the brink of the sack. But the London club players remain supportive of manager despite suffering a second successive three-goal defeat in the Premier League, goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has said.Five days earlier the English club lost 3-0 at home to Bournemouth. The result left them fourth in the table, 19 points adrift of leaders Manchester City, and increased the pressure already mounting on their Italian manager.”We believe in him and we believe in our team. We have two bad results and we just try to get back, regroup and just continue,” Courtois told club’s website.”Obviously we are disappointed with the two results we have had in the last week, obviously it is not good, but we have to regroup in training, have heads high and continue the hard work and just continue what we were doing.Full-time: Watford 4-1 Chelsea. href=”https://twitter.com/hashtag/WATCHEsrc=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw”>#WATCHE pic.twitter.com/lmwNoWb8cLChelsea FC (@ChelseaFC) February 5, 2018″We have now two bad losses but we are a team with the manager, and everyone is positive about that, and we will try to do our best to win next week.”Chelsea were reduced to 10 men against Watford when Tiemoue Bakayoko was sent off after half an hour and they fell behind to Troy Deeney’s penalty 12 minutes later.Eden Hazard equalised eight minutes from time, but late goals from Daryl Janmaat, Gerard Deulofeu and Roberto Pereyra condemned Chelsea to back-to-back three-goal defeats for the first time since 1995.advertisement”We showed that we wanted to fight, even with 10 men, and that shows we have character, but when you lose twice like that, it is not good and there are questions raised, but we go back to training with the manager, and training well and turn this situation around,” Courtois added.Chelsea started 2018 second in the table and in the semi-finals of the League Cup, but they were beaten over two legs by Arsenal and have drawn two and lost two of their five Premier League matches so far this year.Conte’s side are now just one point ahead of fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur and face a fight for Champions League qualification. They remain in this season’s competition but face runaway La Liga leaders Barcelona in the last-16, with the first leg at home on Feb. 20.(With Reuters inputs)last_img read more

Workers at GMs Oshawa Assembly Plant hold work stoppage over closure

first_imgOSHAWA, Ont. — Unionized workers at the General Motors assembly plant in Oshawa, Ont., are back to work after holding a sit-down protest over the planned closure of the facility.Kathleen O’Keefe, a spokeswoman for Unifor, said in an email early today that the workers have since gone back on the line after starting the protest Tuesday. The work stoppage came after Unifor president Jerry Dias sat down with GM on Tuesday to talk about proposals the union had made to extend the life of the Ontario plant, but came away empty-handed.The company has said the options suggested by the union, including extending the life of the Chevy Impala and Cadillac XTS currently produced at the plant or shifting production slated for Mexico to the plant, are not economic.David Paterson, vice president of corporate affairs at GM Canada, says the union should instead work with the company on timing and transition plans for the close to 3,000 affected jobs.GM said it has identified job opportunities, is willing to pay for retraining and is open to negotiations on packages for workers on top of what is already included in contracts. The Canadian Presslast_img read more

Easing pipeline congestion lets Western Canada producers enjoy higher oil prices

first_imgCALGARY, A.B.  – Canadian oil producers are pocketing higher profits as a rise in world oil prices meshes with an improving supply-demand balance that has reduced the price discounts they faced earlier this year.Analysts say temporary shutdowns at Alberta oilsands projects for scheduled maintenance this spring have eased the pipeline congestion that had been exacerbating the difference between bitumen-blend Western Canadian Select and New York-traded West Texas Intermediate crude prices. That means the oil producers, some of whom cut back output in the first quarter because of poor prices, are seeing benefits from WTI prices that rose to three-and-a-half-year highs above US$71 per barrel this week following U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal. “The rally in WTI has some fundamental support and is not all related to Iran and Venezuela,” energy analyst Randy Ollenberger of BMO Capital Markets pointed out in an email on Friday.“Demand is clearly improving … A further drop in Venezuela production is also a real possibility that could provide a further boost to prices.”Iran is the third-largest producer of crude within the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, exporting about 2.6 million barrels per day in April. Prices rose this week on speculation that its exports could be interrupted if sanctions are reapplied by the West.Global oil prices are also being supported by factors including sliding heavy oil production from Venezuela, which is wracked by political instability, and strong adherence to production limits from OPEC and Russia under their 2016 agreement, said Kevin Birn, vice-president of the North American crude oil markets for IHS Markit.“Western Canadian producers, any higher price is unambiguously good for them,” he said.“The situation on pipelines has temporarily been resolved, primarily because of the upstream outages and (maintenance) turnarounds going on, which is allowing the system to clear… and hopefully allowing time for rail to come in.” (THE CANADIAN PRESS)center_img Uncertainty continues to plague proposed new pipelines. The Keystone XL project from Alberta to Texas has been delayed, the future of an expanded Trans Mountain line to Vancouver is in doubt and a routing dispute has emerged over Enbridge Inc.’s Line 3 export pipeline replacement project.Birn said the WCS-WTI discount, which closed at US$19.73 on Thursday, narrowed to an average of about US$12 per barrel last year due to demand in North America for heavy oil but rose quickly after November due to pipeline constraints. It peaked at about US$30 per barrel in the first quarter. The discount is expected to return to more typical levels of about US$15 _ accounting for the difference in quality versus WTI and transport to market _ this spring but will likely rise to US$17-$19 per barrel later in the year because of the higher price of shipping crude by rail, he said.Ollenberger agreed the discount will rise in the second half of the year, noting that new production from Suncor Energy Inc.’s Fort Hills oilsands mine as it ramps up to its 194,000-barrels-per-day capacity will be added to existing oilsands output as the maintenance shutdowns end.last_img read more
