Anthony Nunes’ SOY EL SENOR closed for second behind POKER STAR’s 1:13.0 for six furlongs in his last run and will more than likely start favourite with a half-furlong more to travel. However, he has topweight 126lb and is not the most alert at the start of his races. CRUCIAL APPEAL has the class to sit off the pace again and pounce on the leaders before SOY EL SENOR winds up for his kick in the stretch run. Racing against the country’s top sprinters in April’s grade one Lady Geeta Trophy at six furlongs, CRUCIAL APPEAL ran an even race for fourth, beaten by SIEMPRE BUENO, CHACE THE GREAT and MONEY MAGNET, who only had a length on him in third place. It should be noted that Saturday’s five-furlong straight Reggae Trophy for grade one horses was won by CHACE THE GREAT, closing to beat SIEMPRE BUENO and MONEY MAGNET, the trio which CRUCIAL APPEAL was a little under four lengths behind in April. Though he hasn’t won on the round course in a while, CRUCIAL APPEAL’s six-furlong Lady Geeta run suggests he might have lost his tearaway speed but not class and could be transforming into a run-on sprinter. FAVOURITE Red-hot apprentice and leading rider Anthony Thomas has been given the task of trying to get renowned speedster CRUCIAL APPEAL stay the distance in this afternoon’s overnight allowance at six and a half furlongs. Thomas was aboard the ageing warrior two Saturdays ago when he showed an interesting side of himself, running on strongly inside the last furlong to get within a head of shock winner BIMINI at five furlongs round on July 7. CRUCIAL APPEAL literally lost the race by one hop, closing from six lengths off a furlong out, not the normal position for the eight-year-old, who has on occasions threatened the five-furlong straight track record throughout his career. Apparently pleased with CRUCIAL APPEAL’s come-from-behind run, new trainer Alford Brown has ambitiously stretched out the chestnut gelding, keeping Thomas astride to utilise his five-pound apprentice claim and great form, which has landed him six winners in the last three race meets. SIR BUDGET is again the contending speed after mixing it up with POLLY B, causing both to be swallowed by BIMINI. However, he returns with 121lb and should have the likes of LIGHTNING LILY and DANCING QUEEN pressing him on the lead at 110 and 111lb, respectively.
